How to enroll at Head Start

A day in the life of a child at Head Start

A child's work IS play.  Many times when people come to Head Start centers they comment, "All they do is play. I want my child to be learning."  But play is how children learn.  As children play in our Creative Curriculum learning areas, they are forming the basics of language, math and social skills to prepare them for Kindergarten.  It is important to remember that children develop at different rates, and, for example, not all three-year-olds have the small motor skills yet to write their names.  At Head Start, they are participating in activites which help them develop and learn at the same time.

Here is what readiness skills the children are gaining as they have fun in each interest area:

  • Blocks - Beginning math concepts, problem solving, creativity, motor skills
  • Dramatic Play - Social skills, creativity, emerging language skills (story telling)
  • Art - Small motor skills, pre-writing skills, creativity
  • Sand/Water Table - Beginning math and science concepts, measurement, problem solving, exploration, predicting and observing
  • Outdoor Play - Large motor development, social skills
  • Story time - Pre-reading skills, language development
  • Literacy is incorporated into all aspects of the program

Each child and family receives the same quality services from Head Start, regardless of placement.

Head Start also participates in the I Am Moving, I am Learning program to promote health and nutrition and reduce childhood obesity. For more information on this curriculum contact Dawn Bryant.
