Head Start Family Services

What are Head Start Family Services?

The purpose of the Family Services is to support families in receiving the services they need in order to enhance the quality of their lives.  Head Start believes that something is only a concern if the family identifies it as a concern.  Family Services staff, therefore, will only respond to requests for information and referrals from you.  We will never tell you what you "should" or "ought to" do.

Who are the Family Services Staff?

The Family Services staff is comprised of the Family Services Coordinator and the Family Advocates.  There is one Family Advocate at each Head Start center to serve the families of the children enrolled in the program. The Family Advocates work directly with each family to develop a Family Partnership Agreement and provide information and assistance as needed to reach personal goals.  Family Advocates make at least two home visits during the program year to work directly with the adults in the household.  The Family Advocates also provide support to the center's Parent Group.

How do I get help, if I need it?

Call your Family Advocate.  She will help find resources, make referrals to other agencies, and help make contact with those agencies, if needed.  The Family Advocate is also available to go with families to appointments or meetings, and provide transportation if needed.  Sometimes the Family Advocate will request the Family Services Coordinator help locate resources or provide other support.

What will I be doing during the home visit?

The Family Advocate will be developing a Family Partnership Agreement with you.  They will help you find resources to help in achieving a goal that you have set.  Examples might be:

  • Looking for a different place to live
  • Seeking training or education for employment
  • Major purchases for your family, such as vehicles
  • New skills to improve your interactions with your children
  • Questions about clothing or nutrition
  • Child care needs
  • Managing a budget
  • Special services or medical attention for your child or yourself

How can I participate in and support the Head Start Program?

  • Attend your center's Parent Group meetings. They meet once each month to discuss what is going on in the classrooms and learn about topics that interest them. There are no dues, and child care is provided. Each center decides the day and time they meet, and whether to have a meal at the meeting.
  • Be a member of the Policy Council. This group meets monthly to make decisions regarding the entire Waldo County Head Start program. Policy Council meets in Belfast the third Wednesday of the month from 5:00 pm until approximately 7:00 pm.  Child care and dinner for both children and adults is provided.
  • Volunteer at your center in the classroom, attend a field trip or be a bus aide.
  • Volunteer to support the center by doing projects at home.
